Shading and shadowing with linear light sources

چکیده
In virtually all rendering systems, linear light sources are modeled with a series of point light sources that require considerable computing resources to produce realistic looking results. A general solution for shading surfaces illuminated by a linear light source is proposed. A formulation allowing for faster computation of the di use component of light re ection is derived. By assuming Phong's specular component, simple, inexpensive and convincing results are produced with the use of a Chebyshev approximation. A shadowing algorithm is also presented. As shadowing from linear light sources is expensive, two acceleration schemes, extended from ray tracing, are evaluated.

Shading and Inverse Shading from Direct Illumination
An understanding of light and its interaction with matter is essential to produce images. As the modeling of light sources, light transport and light re ection improves, it becomes possible to render images with increasing realism. The central motivation behind this thesis is to improve realism in computer graphics images by more accurate local shading models and to assist the user to obtain th...
متن کاملApproximating the Location of Integrand Discontinuities for Penumbral Illumination With Linear Light Sources
One of the benefits of shading with linear light sources is also one of its major challenges: generating soft shadows. The primary difficulty in this task is determining the discontinuities in the linear light source integrals that are caused by occluding objects. We demonstrate in this paper that the computed location of each discontinuity only needs to be moderately accurate, provided that th...
متن کاملRealtime Shading of Folded Surfaces
In this paper we present a new, simple, and efficient way to illuminate folded surfaces with extended light sources in realtime including shadows. In a preprocessing step we compute the parts of the surrounding environment that are visible from a set of points on the surface and represent this information in a binary visibility map. The illumination of the scene, i.e., incoming light from diffe...
متن کاملA Review of Selected Multiple Light Source Detection Methods
1 Hougen and Ahuja This 1993 paper [2] is the first method to approach the multiple light source problem. It uses a combination of stereo, light source estimation, and shape from shading methods for determining the shape of objects. This summary will focus on the proposed light source estimation technique and it’s integration in the system. Four main assumptions are stated: 1. The light sources...
متن کاملA Shading Model of Parallel Cylindrical Light Sources
In many industrial designs, such as automobiles and electrical products, evaluating the quality of curved surfaces in the design is very important. If the designer can con rm shapes of curved surfaces visually, working with photo-realistic computer generated images, the designer's \sense" is well utilized. In this paper we will demonstrate method for producing images which can be used by design...
